I have the most amazing readers. Bar none.
Readers, friends.
In forty eight hours you have humbled me with your generosity. Regulars, lurkers and strangers have all dug into their pockets.
You are wonderful, beautiful, generous people.
I’m thrilled to let you know that the donations you’ve given me will let me move from “doing a week’s voluntary work with equipment that is ‘just enough’” to “Spending a week in the desert with the proper kit.”
It’s little things like a proper sleeping bag, instead of shivering in the knackered one I would have taken; drinking from a Camelback rather than a plastic bottle, a pair of decent boots that won’t rip my feet to shreds.
I swore to myself that 2009 was the year in which I’d do something crazy and exciting.
You’ve made that possible.
I, for once, have no words.
Thankyou.
Kal

You’re a lucky bugger, you know that?
It seems I was too late to contribute to your flights but let me know if you’re in need of anything…spare? I’d be more than happy to help.

So pleased to hear you already have the funds you need! You’re still getting a little something from me though-add it to the kitty or treat yourself to a bottle of wine and a curry or something, ‘cos you deserve it!
January 26th, 2009 at 10:01 am
All we ask in return is a photo of Kal in full desert regalia surrounded by his mountains of gear, Action Man style…
January 26th, 2009 at 10:06 am
I second that Paul,
Now do you believe how much affection there is out hare for you??
Have a blast but come home safe ok! x
January 26th, 2009 at 10:23 am
Have fun! Enjoy! You deserve it
And please come back in one piece!
January 26th, 2009 at 10:44 am
I think for every donation he got, he should have one ridiculously posed shot wearing all of his gear…All those in favour?
January 26th, 2009 at 12:18 pm
I second Stuart’s idea
Aye!
January 26th, 2009 at 12:54 pm
I third Stuart’s idea, and add that at least one of the shots should be of Kal in all his gear.. in the middle of Edinburgh. Before and after pics, people!
January 26th, 2009 at 1:02 pm
As long as he adopts cheesy clothes-catalogue poses for each shot I agree

See Kal - what goes around comes around - and it’s coming around to you now - love your blog - it’s my favourite. Have a great time.
January 26th, 2009 at 3:49 pm
hopefully you will have lots of words so we can live vicariously thru your posts.
Have fun and don’t forget to write!
January 26th, 2009 at 5:11 pm
I’ve been meaning to donate since you wrote the blog entry - so now done, have a drink or something with it since you’ve raised what you needed! I knew when I saw the entry that you’d have no problem getting what you needed. Just have a wonderful time, can’t wait to hear all about it.
January 26th, 2009 at 6:34 pm
I fourth Stuart. (If that is a word)
January 26th, 2009 at 7:06 pm
Hey, I fifth Stuart
:)

January 26th, 2009 at 9:16 pm
I guess I was too late to contribute this time: when’s your next trip?! And I think Stuart’s idea is great cos of course you’ll have to have a dry run with all that gear.
January 26th, 2009 at 11:34 pm
Some great ideas here - I think I would love to see a “Chinese Callum” style set of photos where various things are occluded and we have to guess what they are
January 27th, 2009 at 11:47 am
If my £10 came too late to be spent on flash gear, buy yourself and whomever you please a drink on me x
January 27th, 2009 at 5:11 pm
errr I sixth Stuart? Or did I miscount?
January 27th, 2009 at 7:55 pm
Well done - I’ll look out for the sandblasted sunburned person on the stairs
January 27th, 2009 at 9:27 pm
I’d like to contribute my little bit but my creaky old browser is so full of security holes, last time I sent anyone my credit card number it was used for a list of charges from a place thousands of miles away. Do you have a workplace address or anywhere I could send a cheque? If not, I’ll send a contribution to the first humanitarian organisation you work for.

Some of us would like conformation that a large number of extremely posed photographs will be taken! Seems like the idea was a hit
January 28th, 2009 at 6:04 pm
(Take a nalgene not a camelbak - easier to fill and no tube to go skanky…)
January 30th, 2009 at 7:58 am
Really glad you raised the money - and so quickly
It sounds like it’ll be an adventure, so I really hope you enjoy it - including the sandblasting in places that possibly shouldn’t be snadblasted!
January 30th, 2009 at 8:57 pm
And for those of us who would like to join Kal ? I am informed the Daily Mail website has a competition to win a chance to go on the rally plus pocket money! Enter before Sunday if you dare.

Maybe I’m a bit late with my donation but better late than never. If you already have all you need for the trip then you can give my wee bit to a worthy cause of your choice. Whatever you do, have fun and be safe. Looking forward to all your stories already!
(Sunscreen and sand are bringing forth images of a fishfinger……strange)!!
